* First names: On her OPR birth record, her first names were spelled 'Jess. MacKinzie Kennady' (there was as full-stop after Jess on the OPR - this indicates an abbreviation) - but are sometimes spelled 'Jessie McKenzie Kennedy' (eg Colin Semmler's book). MacKinzie might have been after her father's commanding officer. Kennady might have come from the minister who officiated over her baptism - he might have been a family friend.
* Surname: Spelled MATHIESON.
| MATHESON, Jessie MacKinzie Kennady (I3)

* Surnames: At her baptism, Ann was given her mother's maiden surname, DEANS rather than her father's surname, WILLESEE. (Her father, William Willesee, might have died a little before Ann was born, because her mother is identified as a widow on Ann's birth record). Ann's surname changed to BEECH when she married Samuel Beech and the RAINS when she married William Rains - and finally, SALTMARSH when she married Henry. On some documents Deans is spelled DEAINS or DAINS. And Beech is sometimes BEACH. And Rains is sometimes Raines. Willesee is always Willesee and is used as a middle name for many descendants.
* First names: Her birth record just has Ann (not Anne) but, during her life, she used Ann Willesee.

At present we have not been able to confirm the details of David's birth. His father was certainly John, and it was certainly in the Parish of Fodderty, at Dochmaluag. But the year might be either 1810, 1811, 1812, 1814 & 1816:-
* Census: The censuses imply that David was born around 1814 or 1816 (the 1841 census has him aged 25 years, the 1851 census has him aged 37 years and born in Fodderty, and the 1861 census 47 years and born in Fodderty)
* OPR: 22nd March 1810 in Fodderty - John Finlayson above Dochmaluag - a son, David.
* OPR: 1st Dec 1811 in Fodderty - John Finlayson weaver Ht?? Dochmaluag - a son, David.
* Death certificate: David's death certificate has his father as John, a weaver, and that he was born around 1812 (aged 50 years when he died in 1862).
* It is surprising that there were two births within this small community, just 20 months apart, with the same name of father and of child. Maybe it was the same father, but two Davids - ie as with the next generation, perhaps the first David died soon after he was born, and then his parents named their next child as the second David in the family.
* Father John's occupation as a weaver is recorded on the death certificate and the OPR of 1811.
* Dochmaluag is 3 kms east of Dingwall.
* Conclusion: We cannot be sure, but, taking all these sources into account, it is most likely to be the OPR with David born in Dochmaluag on 1st Dec 1811. | FINLAYSON, David (I923)

Birth : No birth records have been located.
The date is not certain - it might have been 1791 or 1794 or 1795. The possibility of 1791 arises because she was recorded in the 1881 census as aged 90 years, and recorded as aged 92 on her death certificate in 1883. Or it could have been 1794 because she was recorded as aged 77 on the 1871 census). Or it could have been about 1795 because the she was recorded as aged 56 on the 1851 census. Or 1814 (ref : Colin Semmler)
The place is not certain. Dores or Dries (on the 1851 and 1861 censuses), or Strathese??? (on the 1871 census) or Fodderty (on the 1881 census). Or Killearnan, Ross & Cromarty (ref : Colin Semmler)
[Question : Do these different dates and places mean that any of these sources are referring to a different Elizabeth?]

Birth date: Alexander Matheson's birthdate appears to be 1767 or 1768. This is based on his army discharge papers which have him 26 years old when he enlisted in 21st March 1793. This is consistent with other sections of his discharge papers which have him as 46 years old after 20 years and 194 days of service which indicate that he was 25 or 26 years old when he enlisted in 1793. This birthdate has him fathering his youngest child (John) when he was 76 years old - which is possible, but interesting.
Birth place : The army discharge papers have him as born in "the Parish of Lochalsh in or near the town of Dingwall within the county of Ross". This needs further clarification as Dingwall is a long way from Lochailsh.
