Notes for biography Donald Gollan played significant parts in Hugh's life:-
    * Donald, might have assisted Hugh to migrate (along with his brother George & half-brother Alexander).
    * Hugh married Margaret Gollan, who might have been Donald's niece.
    * A middle name of three of their children have a middle name of Gollan - but this might be acknowledging their mother rather than Donald.
Immigration * Disembarked from the Charlotte Jane at Adelaide on 4th May 1854.
    * Hugh was possibly sponsored by Donald Gollan
    * Historian Barry Leadbeater does not have any record of the 'Charlotte Jane' arriving in SA (it arrived in Canterbury in NZ around 1850). There was a 'Charlotte' which arrived ex Launceston on 7th Aug 1839 but there were no Mathesons or Gollans on board. And there was a 'Maria Charlotte' ex Stockholm on 8th Oct 1850 but no Gollans or Mathesons on them either.

    • Married at Margaret's mother's residence, 'The Swamp Farm', Strathalbyn. Her mother is Amy (or Ann) Gollan. The wedding was officiated by Rev John Anderson
    • Question : Some sources indicate that Hugh's wife was someone else, but it is doubted that these other sources are correct.
      * Margaret GORDON : The birth record of her daughter, Jessie Gollan MATHESON has her mother as Margaret GORDON (ref : Aust Birth Index, vol 73, p 166). If it is true that her mother was a Gordon, is this Margaret related to the Alexander Gordons? He had a daughter, Margaret, but she would have only been 9 years old when Jessie was born.
      * Catherine Christina GOLLAN : "He married a niece of Gollan's, namely Catherine Christina Gollan." (ref : Alexandrina's Shore, Jim Faull, p 150) But who is this Catherine, and what connection has she with Donald Gollan?
      * Resolution: It is most likely that Jessie's mother is Margaret Gollan as indicated by Jessie's middle name. And Margaret's marriage notice states that the wedding was held in the home of the bride's mother - Ann Gollan. We need to get a copy of actual birth record's of Hugh's children (rather than a transcription from the Aust Birth Index).

Children Of Hugh and Margaret's six daughters, only the first, Elizabeth was married. Four of them were spinster teachers at neighbouring schools - Jessie, Christina, Margaret and Alexandrina - ie four Miss Mathesons were teachers. Their other daughter, Jane, died when she was just three years old.
