Jessie & Alexander GORDON - family tree & stories
|
 |
|
1836 - 1927 (91 years)
-
Name |
Margaret Munro GOLLAN |
- Research: Where did this middle name 'Munro' come from? (There was a John Munro as a witness at her birth)
|
Born |
1836 |
Beauly, Inverness-shire [1] |
- Margaret's birth record has her registered in the Parish of Kirkhill, with her father, John at Bogroy. There is a place called Bogroy at Carrbridge that is 54 kms to the south-east of Kirkhill, Beauly (there is another Kirkhill at Fochabers - Bogroy is 58 kms south-west of that Kirkhill but it is not a Parish). With the distance of 54 kms, we cannot be confident that Margaret was born in Carrbridge. Maybe there is another place called Bogroy (or similar spelling) near to Beauly. We might get better clarity if we could work out where one of the witnesses was from (John Munro was from what looks like 'Kalagan' but it is difficult to read on the birth record, and we have not found a place with this name).

Notes for biography |
Margaret's father was John Gollan who died before her mother, Ann Fraser migrated with Margaret and two brothers. She arrived in Adelaide 1859 (4 months after the other Margaret married Thomas Laidlaw). She married Hugh Matheson in 1861 and they had 8 children, all born in Strathalbyn from 1863 to 1878.
She died in Strathalbyn 1927. |
Notes for biography |
THE GOLLANS IN STRATHALBYN
* The Gollan surname was well known in Strathalbyn in the last half of the 1800s.
* In particular, there are Donald and two Margarets. We record them on our three websites. Donald is on the WAY website. One Margaret, born 1836, is on the GORDON website. The other Margaret, born 1826, is on this McLEAN website.
* Donald Gollan was prominent in public life and was the owner of the Terminus Hotel and several businesses. His wife was Catherine Matheson. They adopted Catherine 'Kitty' Gordon. Donald's profile is in www.samuelway.info.
* There were two women named Margaret Gollan who were both born near Inverness and both settled in Strathalbyn and both married and had children there around the same time.
* One Margaret Gollan was born in 1836. She was Donald's niece (ie she was the daughter of Donald's bother, John) and also she was Donald's sister-in-law (ie married to Hugh Matheson who was the half-brother of Donald's wife, Catherine). She migrated on the Salamanca in 1859. In 1861 she married Hugh and they had eight children, three of whom had a middle name of Gollan. See www.alexanderandjessiegordon.net.
* The other Margaret Gollan was born in 1826. She had two marriages in Scotland and migrated in 1856. In 1859 she married Thomas Laidlaw and they had three children, two of whom had a middle name of Gollan. She had no known connections with Donald. See www.christinaanddonaldmclean.com.

Immigration |
* Margaret Gollan migrated on the Salamanca which departed London on 3rd July 1859 and arrived at Adelaide on 7th Oct 1859. (SA State Records GRG 56/68/7) There were four Gollans onboard - Margaret, Charles, Donald F & Mrs Gollan.
* Hugh Matheson migrated on the Charlotte Jane and disembarked at Adelaide on 4th May 1854. His brother, Alexander was with him. |

Hugh Innis Cameron MATHESON, b. 12 Aug 1831, d. 28 May 1915, 'Clashmore',Strathalbyn, SA, Australia (Age 83 years) |
Married |
18 Sep 1861 |
Strathalbyn,SA |
- Married at Margaret's mother's residence, 'The Swamp Farm', Strathalbyn. Her mother is Amy (or Ann) Gollan. The wedding was officiated by Rev John Anderson
- Question : Some sources indicate that Hugh's wife was someone else, but it is doubted that these other sources are correct.
* Margaret GORDON : The birth record of her daughter, Jessie Gollan MATHESON has her mother as Margaret GORDON (ref : Aust Birth Index, vol 73, p 166). If it is true that her mother was a Gordon, is this Margaret related to the Alexander Gordons? He had a daughter, Margaret, but she would have only been 9 years old when Jessie was born.
* Catherine Christina GOLLAN : "He married a niece of Gollan's, namely Catherine Christina Gollan." (ref : Alexandrina's Shore, Jim Faull, p 150) But who is this Catherine, and what connection has she with Donald Gollan?
* Resolution: It is most likely that Jessie's mother is Margaret Gollan as indicated by Jessie's middle name. And Margaret's marriage notice states that the wedding was held in the home of the bride's mother - Ann Gollan. We need to get a copy of actual birth record's of Hugh's children (rather than a transcription from the Aust Birth Index).

Children |
Of Hugh and Margaret's six daughters, only the first, Elizabeth was married. Four of them were spinster teachers at neighbouring schools - Jessie, Christina, Margaret and Alexandrina - ie four Miss Mathesons were teachers. Their other daughter, Jane, died when she was just three years old.
